How come Norton Anti-virus wont start up?

when i start up my computer Norton doesn't show in the bottom right hand corner like it usually does. i still see messages that SONAR has blocked something but i cant open the Norton panel to do a system scan. i clicked on the Norton icon and nothing happens, nothing loads. so if anybody has an answer to why this is happening i would gladly appreciate it.
