Do people of different languages ever say english phrases such as "thank you" and "hello"?

Yes they do! I was in Mexico last week and I was introduced to a woman and we shook hands and she said "Hi"! So I responded "hi, how are you?" By the blank look on her face I knew she didn"t understand what I had said and quickly added " como esta?"!!
